The main objective of these qualifications is to provide learners with the knowledge, and many of the skills, required to work in custodial environments.

SFJ Awards Level 3 Certificate in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment (601/7326/9) – This qualification is being withdrawn, see below.

SFJ Awards Level 3 Diploma in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment (601/5367/2)

The Level 3 Certificate in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment consists of the following mandatory units:

  1. Understanding health and safety responsibilities in custodial environments
  2. Understanding communication and interpersonal skills in custodial environments
  3. Understanding safer custodial environments
  4. Operating safely in custodial environments
  5. Operating securely in custodial environments

Total Qualification Time (TQT):  220 hours
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 176

To achieve the Level 3 Diploma in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment, learners need to achieve the units in the Certificate above, plus the units listed below:

  1. Understanding organisational, legal and moral responsibilities for individuals in custody
  2. Understanding offending behaviour and methods for reducing re-offending
  3. Recording and reporting in a custodial environment
  4. Use of force in custodial environments
  5. Searching individuals and custodial environments
  6. Escorting in custodial environments
  7. Model pro-social behaviour in working relationships with individuals

Total Qualification Time (TQT):  490 hours
Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 378

Pre-entry Requirements

There are no pre-entry requirements for enrolling to complete these qualifications.

Qualification Withdrawal

The SFJ Awards Level 3 Certificate in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment is being withdrawn and therefore no further learners can be registered after 31 March 2020. All certifications of learners already registered on the qualification must be complete by 31 March 2021.
