Representatives of NFCC and United Kingdom Rescue Organisation amongst others have collaborated with SFJ Awards on the development of 2 new Ofqual-regulated qualifications to improve road traffic collision training in the fire and rescue services.
The Level 3 Award in Road Traffic Collision Instruction and the Level 3 Award Revalidation in Road Traffic Collision Instruction – both introduced on 1st July – provide an entry route into and continuing professional development credits for the role of Road Traffic Collision Instructor.
Road Traffic Collision Instructors are wholetime firefighters who train and support their colleagues to respond to road traffic collisions and play a key role in ensuring alignment with multi-agency approaches and best practice extrication and trauma management procedures.
Neil Pederson, CEO at International Road Rescue and Trauma Consultancy Ltd, was part of the expert working group to design the qualification. He comments:
“These new qualifications enhance the relevance, safety, and effectiveness of road traffic collision instruction, ensuring instructors are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver high-quality training.
“What’s more the introduction of a Revalidation Qualification will support instructors in maintaining their competence and ensuring they stay current in their role. In turn, this will help standardise ongoing professional development and reinforce the importance of continuous learning.”
David Higham, Managing Director of emergency services qualifications body SFJ Awards, comments:
“Responding to road traffic collisions has become increasingly complex of in recent years due to the growth in electric vehicles and other technological developments. Against this background, our expert working group conducted a 5-month review to bring the Level 3 Award in Road Traffic Collision Instruction into alignment with current best practices and to introduce the revalidation qualification.
“The standalone qualification has been updated to reflect current safety guidelines and the revalidation qualification supports instructors to maintain their competences in light of a changing operational environment.”
The SFJ Awards Level 3 Award in Road Traffic Collision Instruction and SFJ Awards Level 3 Award Revalidation in Road Traffic Collision Instruction are available from 1 July.
