In response to demand from the fire and rescue sector, a new Level 3 Award in Fire Control Command qualification is being developed by SFJ Awards.
About the qualification
The incident command system, which has traditionally been applied at operational, tactical, and strategic levels, has now been extended to fire control. This ensures a robust and consistent command structure across all areas of fire and rescue operations.
The role of a Fire Control Commander is crucial in leading the fire control function, and training and assessment for this role is now a requirement under the National Operational Guidance (NOG) framework.
Aims of this qualification
The qualification is aimed at Watch or Crew Managers who are responsible for managing the fire control function. The fire control function must be able to manage a wide range of operational demands, including:
- Single incidents
- Multiple or simultaneous incidents
- High volumes of calls
- Spate conditions (e.g. wildfires, widespread flooding, extreme weather)
- Major incidents
- Planned events.
The new qualification aims to support the developmental competence of those in command roles within fire control, ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to lead effectively and maintain public safety during both routine and complex scenarios.
