Nikki’s inspiring journey through Fire Control apprenticeship to Operational Firefighter apprentice

Nikki’s apprenticeship journey is a testament to resilience, commitment, and the power of community. Balancing personal and professional challenges, Nikki has overcome obstacles and set an example of dedication to Merseyside Fire and Rescue’s values.

Nikki was running her own business prior to joining Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) in January 2024. She joined the service as an Emergency Contact Handler apprentice. Nikki faced the additional challenge of needing to complete Functional Skills training, which involve essential literacy and numeracy skills to fulfil the requirements, during her apprenticeship. She tackled the situation head-on, dedicating time to attend classes and revise diligently. Balancing this with the demands of her apprenticeship and family life she successfully passed both the Emergency Contact Handler apprenticeship and the Functional Skills requirement, demonstrating perseverance and determination.

As part of the apprenticeship program me, apprentices are asked to complete a challenge that embodies the service’s values of commitment to making a difference through fundraising or volunteering. Nikki’s choice was a treadmill challenge that brought the entire organisation together. Her goal was ambitious: to collectively climb the equivalent of the Three Peaks, which is 3,400 metres.

Nikki’s leadership shone as she promoted the challenge across the organisation, rallying volunteers from all departments – including the Chief – and even engaging local Police colleagues. She carefully allocated time slots for participants to take turns on the treadmill, fostering a sense of camaraderie among individuals who might not usually work together. The result was remarkable: the group not only met the initial target but exceeded it by climbing a staggering 10,846 metres, raising a significant amount of money for the Firefighter Charity in the process.

Beyond her treadmill challenge, Nikki has above and beyond to embed the fire service values in her daily activities. Volunteering for the role of attractions co-ordinator, demonstrating commitment in the positive action programme and promoting recruitment from the diverse backgrounds that the community represents. She volunteered at recruitment events, spoke at schools about careers in the fire service, supported Older Persons Day, participated in Women in the Fire Service Week, and delivered a reading at the Christmas Carol Concert. Through these efforts, Nikki inspired others while continuing to develop her own understanding of the organisation’s mission and values.

Nikki’s commitment to excellence was evident as she worked tirelessly to achieve a distinction in her apprenticeship. Her dedication and passion didn’t go unnoticed and prepared her for the next step in her journey. Nikki was also recognised with nomination of Apprentice of the Year for the NFCC Apprenticeship Awards.

Nikki has now successfully secured a position as an Operational Firefighter apprentice—a role that demands significant personal and professional commitment to meet the rigorous operational standards. This achievement marks the beginning of a new chapter in her career.

Nikki’s story is a shining example of what can be achieved with apprenticeship opportunities through determination, teamwork, and a commitment to values. Her journey not only highlights her individual success but also demonstrates the positive impact of fostering a supportive and inclusive culture within the fire service.
