As organisations across the UK prepare for the requirements of the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, ensuring staff understand how to recognise potential threats and respond appropriately has never been more important.
To support this need, SFJ Awards has launched the Level 2 Award in Counter-Terrorism Protective Security Awareness – a regulated qualification designed to help organisations build security awareness.
Unlike qualifications focused on operational planning or protective security management, this Level 2 Award provides an accessible introduction for staff to understand terrorism-related threats and key organisational requirements under the new regulations.
Supporting organisations to build awareness
Creating a secure environment is a shared responsibility. While specialist security professionals may lead protective security planning, every member of staff has a role to play in recognising potential threats, following procedures and reporting concerns.
The Level 2 Award has been developed for organisations looking to provide consistent, assessed training that helps employees understand terrorism-related risks and their own responsibilities, while supporting readiness for the implementation of Martyn’s Law.
Suitable for a wide range of public-facing environments, the qualification is ideal for:
- Front-line and customer-facing staff
- Security personnel, event staff and stewards
- Facilities and estates teams
- Supervisors and team leaders
- Volunteers and contractors
- Staff working in venues or locations accessible to the public.
Practical knowledge that can make the difference
Delivered over a single day, the qualification provides learners with an understanding of:
- Terrorism threats and common attack methods
- The purpose and intent of Martyn’s Law
- Identifying suspicious behaviour and items
- Reporting and escalation procedures
- Immediate response actions
- Public access trauma first aid awareness.
Assessment is through a 25-question multiple-choice test set by SFJ Awards, providing organisations with evidence that learners have successfully demonstrated their understanding.
Flexible delivery for centres and employers
The qualification has been designed to be straightforward to deliver, with a comprehensive package of support available for approved centres.
Key features include:
- Regulated Level 2 qualification
- One-day delivery model
- SFJ Awards-set multiple-choice assessment
- Free tutor resources, including presentation slides
- Free resit included
- Provides evidence of staff training in counter-terrorism awareness
- Progression opportunities into higher-level counter-terrorism and protective security qualifications.
A pathway to further development
For learners with additional responsibilities for planning, implementing or managing protective security measures, the qualification provides a progression route to the SFJ Awards Level 3 Award in Counter-Terrorism Protective Security and Preparedness, endorsed by NaCTSO.
It can also support progression into wider learning in protective security, emergency preparedness, security operations, event safety, business continuity and risk management.
