Consultation: SFJ Awards Level 5 Fire Investigation qualifications

SFJ Awards is consulting on two Level 5 fire investigation qualifications: a new Level 5 Award in Fire Investigation and a review of the existing Level 5 Certificate in Fire Investigation.

We are inviting feedback from employers, fire and rescue services, training providers, practitioners and other stakeholders with an interest in fire investigation.

Developing a new Level 5 Award in Fire Investigation

SFJ Awards is developing a new Level 5 Award in Fire Investigation to provide a clear progression route for those developing their skills and experience in fire investigation.

The proposed qualification will sit between the SFJ Awards Level 2 Award in Introduction to Fire Investigation and the SFJ Awards Level 5 Certificate in Fire Investigation.

It has been designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to:

prepare for and undertake investigations into incidents involving fire and/or explosion

report on fire investigation findings

present investigation findings and evidence in court or at other hearings.

The proposed qualification will provide foundation training for those new to undertaking Tier 2 fire investigations, supporting the development of the knowledge and skills required to operate at this level in line with the NFCC Competency Framework for Fire Investigation.

Reviewing the Level 5 Certificate in Fire Investigation

The Certificate has been in place for several years and, as part of our standard qualification review process, we are reviewing its content to ensure it remains current, fit for purpose and aligned with relevant legislation and industry requirements.

The qualification is work-based and designed to accredit the knowledge and skills required to investigate, report and present evidence relating to incidents involving fire and/or explosion.

Have your say

The consultation covers both qualifications within a single survey. Your feedback will help inform the development of the new Level 5 Award and the review of the existing Level 5 Certificate.

Whether you are involved in fire investigation, training, assessment or the wider fire and rescue sector, we welcome your views.

The consultation runs from 5 October to 1 November 2026.
