In May 2018 the Custody and Detention Officer Apprenticeship Standard was approved for delivery by the Institute for Apprenticeships. As an approved Independent End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) for a number of Apprenticeship Standards, we’re pleased to announce the launch of the SFJ Awards Custody and Detention End Point Assessment.
Developed by a trailblazer group lead by Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), The Custody and Detention Officer Apprenticeship Standard is for individuals working in a secure environment as a Prison Officer, Custodial Officer, Detention Officer or Escorting Officer. No matter what type, or size of organisation the Apprentice is working in, or whether they are operating in the public or private sector, the key knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be competent in this role will be the same.
The Custody and Detention Apprenticeship programme is for those over the age of 18 and is of a Level 3 standard, for a minimum of twelve months. The Apprentice is assigned a suitable role and receives on-programme supported training where they learn the ‘knowledge, skills and behaviours’ set in the apprenticeship standard. Through regular progress reviews the Apprentice and their employer, or training provider will ensure they have collated sufficient evidence for their portfolio and the Apprentice should complete practice assessments in preparation for the EPA Gateway.

Such work has already commenced with HMPPS and PTS Training Academy (Personal Track Safety Ltd).
Once a formal agreement like this has been put in place, we work together to deliver the EPA for each Apprentice, ensuring standard materials are available to all, including handbooks, guides, document templates, and where applicable, mock assessments and practice tests.
