Staff at HM Inspectorate of Probation have recently worked with SFJ Awards to update the former Inspection Skills Certificate which was originally developed in 2023. The 2026 updates to the certificate ensure it remains fit for purpose and keeps pace with developments in the frameworks for inspection used to assess probation and youth justice services.
The Inspection Development Pathway (IDP) is a mandatory qualification which supports the learning and development journey of a new inspector or assistant inspector. The structured programme involves core training and on-the-job observation and assessment where learners must generate a portfolio of their work. The programme equips inspection staff with the necessary skills and experience to undertake high-quality inspections.
The update to the certificate broadens criteria to develop and assess the full range of capabilities required of inspectors, including professional judgement, evidence analysis, interviewing, report writing, stakeholder engagement, and leadership behaviours.
This custom certification for the inspectorate is backed by expert assessors and quality assurance professionals to ensure it is a rigorous, industry-standard programme of training. This commitment to quality provides real value to learners in gaining recognition of their competence.
