Level 5 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment now live

Continuing our expansion of regulated qualifications in fire risk assessment, and following a comprehensive public consultation, the new certificate is now available for centres to deliver.

Stakeholders were invited to share their views on the qualification to make sure it reflects best practice and meets the needs of the sector.

As with the existing suite of qualifications, the Level 5 Certificate is aligned to BS 8674 Building Safety Act 2022 and will, following approval, be submitted to BAFE for inclusion on the SP205 Qualification Register.

The next qualification in this suite, the Level 5 Diploma in Fire Risk Assessment, is currently under consultation and due to be released later this summer. This will provide progression pathways for learners and help progress the professionalism of fire risk assessment practitioners across the UK.

Who is the qualification for?

The Level 5 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment is designed for practitioners working, or looking to work, at an advanced level in fire risk assessment. The qualification builds on our existing Level 3 and Level 4 Fire Risk Assessment qualifications and is aligned to BS 8674:2025. It supports the development and validation of advanced competence, with a focus on carrying out consistent, proportionate and defensible fire risk assessments across a range of premises, including more complex and higher-risk environments. It also reflects the increasing emphasis on professional competence, quality and consistency within the sector following the Building Safety Act 2022 and wider post-Grenfell reforms.

What does the qualification cover?

The new certificate has two mandatory units which cover the advanced principles of fire risk assessment and fire risk assessment in high-risk residential and mixed-use buildings.
