Fire engineering plays an important role in keeping people and buildings safe, but the work involved in assessing fire safety and fire engineering design increasingly requires a broad understanding of engineering principles, risk and practical application.
SFJ Awards is consulting on a proposed Level 5 Diploma in Fire Engineering Design (Technician), designed for professionals who work in, or intend to work in, roles involving the auditing or risk assessment of fire engineering premises, and the design or assessment of fire engineering design submissions.
We are inviting feedback from professionals and organisations with an interest in fire engineering, fire safety and the built environment to help shape the qualification before it is finalised.
Developing practical fire engineering knowledge
The proposed qualification is aimed at a range of professionals whose roles may involve working with fire engineering principles and design, including:
- Building control officers
- Approved inspectors
- Fire engineers
- Fire safety regulators
- Inspectors
- Fire risk assessors
- Managers
- Surveyors
- Architects
- Other fire safety professionals
The qualification is intended to support individuals working towards Fire Engineering Technician status, giving them a structured opportunity to develop their knowledge and practical understanding in this area.
The proposed Level 5 Diploma would enable learners to develop an understanding of fundamental engineering principles and how these can be applied when dealing with practical fire engineering problems.
This includes developing the ability to identify appropriate, proven techniques and procedures, apply them to practical situations and recognise when a problem or design consideration requires the input of a fire engineer.
For employers and organisations, this could provide a structured route for developing the technical knowledge and capability of professionals working across fire safety, inspection, regulation, design and the built environment.
