Total Qualification Time (TQT)

On 1 October 2015 Ofqual withdrew the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) and the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), replacing them with a single Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). They also introduced a new measure of qualification size, Total Qualification Time (TQT) and new definitions of level in terms of knowledge and skills. TQT includes all the time needed to gain a qualification, including:

  • –  teaching or immediate guidance/supervision by a lecturer, supervisor or tutor (known as Guided Learning Hours, or GLH)
  • –  assessment, and
  • –  other study.

SFJ Awards and other Awarding Organisations must now allocate TQT and GLH to all new qualifications submitted to the Ofqual Register. The new requirements are being phased in so that by 31 December 2017 all existing qualifications will also have TQT and GLH allocated to them.

Consultation has already started on the TQT for some qualifications and we would like to thank those centres who have already been involved in this process. An ongoing programme of work has now started to update our qualification handbooks with TQT information.
