The Higher Apprenticeship in Criminal Investigation has been developed by Skills for Justice in consultation with employers and is to be offered through SFJ Awards.
The Level 5 apprenticeship – equivalent to the first year of a degree – is aimed at detectives investigating serious and complex crimes and learners will be eligible for funding.
It is hoped that it will contribute to developing a consistent national standard for detective investigators as well as providing a platform for career progression into management in policing and law enforcement or the wider justice sector.
The apprenticeship will incorporate the recently-launched Level 5 Diploma in Criminal Investigation of Serious and Complex Crime awarded by SFJ Awards.
The diploma, which is equivalent to a foundation degree, was designed specifically for detectives after the ACPO North West region of forces requested a qualification which recognised the professionalism of people performing detective roles.
Units undertaken as part of the qualification include investigative decision making, interviewing victims and witnesses, criminal law and the legal framework – all in relation to the investigation of serious and complex crime.
